What carbon monoxide alarms can and can't do?

Alarms are designed to sense insensate carbon monoxide from a malfunctioning water heater, gas stove, gasoline engine, or other source of carbon monoxide. The alarm can only detect carbon monoxide reaching the sensor head, carbon monoxide may appear in other places without reaching the sensor head. The speed at which carbon monoxide reaches the alarm may be affected by doors, windows or other obstructions. Additionally, fresh air from vents or open windows or any other source may prevent carbon monoxide from reaching the sensor head.

Carbon monoxide can appear on one floor of a home without reaching the one with the alarm. For this reason, we recommend installing a carbon monoxide alarm on each floor to protect the entire home.
This alarm cannot be used to detect natural gas (methane), propane, butane or other flammable materials.
